Mikuni Japanese Restaurant & Sushi Bar (Roseville, CA)
As major sushi aficionados, Bob and I have been to many different Japanese restaurants and sushi bars throughout California...and Mikuni Japanese Restaurant is our favorite place to have sushi in the Sacramento area! Mikuni has locations in Roseville, Fair Oaks, Midtown Sacramento, Arden Fair Mall in Sacramento, Elk Grove, Davis, Northstar at Lake Tahoe and Park Meadows in Lone Tree, Colorado (just south of Denver).
Bob and I decided to try something new the other night and order from their Seafood Plates menu, since we've always ordered sushi and sashimi in the past. We'd definitely order both of these plates again, but my favorite between the two was the Pepperfin...it was like having sashimi with a sauce!
Besides having one of the most extensive sushi roll menus around, Mikuni has a secret dish that does not appear on their menu...the 12 o'clock (my very FAVORITE treat!) which is featured in the first photo below. Bob and I decided to try something new the other night and order from their Seafood Plates menu, the Pepperfin and Sauteed White Tuna. We'd definitely order both of these dishes again, but my preference was the Pepperfin...it was like having sashimi in a sauce!
12 o'clock
raw oysters topped with uni (sea urchin), tobiko (fish eggs), green onions and a quail egg yolk
Pepperfin
thin slices of albacore tuna seasoned w/ spicy peppers, a twist of lemon in soy sauce & sesame oil
Sauteed White Tuna
sauteed white tuna with garlic lemon sauce and cilantro
If you're having a birthday celebration, Mikuni Japanese Restaurant & Sushi Bar in Roseville, CA is a fun place to come! I celebrated a couple of birthdays here and I got to spin the Mikuni Wheel of Fortune - one year I won a bag of rice and another year I won a marble soda. :)

wow... what a great treat!
will surely visit that restaurant on one of my trips!
James, the 12 o'clock is definitely one of the items on my "last meal on earth" menu...don't forget to ask for it when you stop by a Mikuni's! :)
Leilani
Like what you're doing with the blog! The pics and the sushi look great!
Leilani - My husband and I love Mikunis! Next time you go try the BBQ Tuna with White sauce (it's seared slightly) and the Black and White! Two of our favorites.
Oh my goodness, Mikuni's sounds like a terrific place for sushi lovers! (Like me) I love the pictures and yes, that Pepperfin looks amazing!
Leilani, you must be having restaurant week, as all this food looks fabulous!
Leilani, this looks like a great place to eat. I have never been that bold to try dishes like that, but I did like the lomi lomi salmon when in Hawaii. (does that count?) ^_~
Thanks, Rick...glad you like it! :)
Leilani
DeeDee, thanks for your recommendations...I'll remember that for next time if I'm not too tempted to order the Pepperfin again! :)
Leilani
Thank you, Leesa! Mikuni's is definitely a sushi-lovers heaven! :)
Leilani
Joan, I'm just getting caught up on my hyperlocal restaurant posts...but I wish we had a restaurant week in Roseville! :)
Leilani
You're funny, Bruce! Lomi lomi salmon is quite an accomplishment for meat & potato people (not sure if you're one or not, though)...the 12 o'clock ranks high up there on the "daring" scale, with sea urchin, fish eggs and a raw oyster! :)
Leilani
Leilani, I just absolutely loved the lomi lomi salmon and would try and have it several times whenever we visited the islands. I just have always been wary of eating raw fish because of the potential for parasites. You are much bolder than I!
Leilani - My husband and son would LOVE Mikuni Japanese Restaurant, they can't get enough sushi.
Leilani Very picturesque and appetizing post on a local Japanese restaurant - you know how to make it temping
Bruce, you know you're an honorary kama'aina when you start eating lomi lomi salmon with poi...and that's not raw, it's just the taro root pounded into a paste! :)
Leilani
P.S. Bold I am when it comes to food. I eat (and love!) deep fried shrimp heads...eyes and all! It's sort of a delicacy called "amaebi" in Japanese restaurants and they serve it with the raw body of the shrimp as sushi.
And not you, Michelle? ;)
Leilani
Thank you, Karen...this was an easy meal to photograph, especially with the beautiful colors in the first dish. :)

Leilani, My sister absolutely loves sushi. Each time she comes to visit from N. Florida we head out to a Sushi Bar.
Sandy, your sister sounds like me...I'd hit the sushi bars even BEFORE I head out shopping! :)

Before I had ever tried Sushi I felt I wouldn't like it at all. A friend took me there for the first time a few years ago and was so excited that I liked to try new things. When I found out it was a Sushi bar I was a bit discourage but her enthusiasm overwelmed me and I kept my mouth closed.. She took over the ordering and was I surprized to see there was lots of dishes there I actually enjoyed. Now, I'm up for it, and these photos are wonderful... so life like. thanks for sharing, M
Mike, thanks for sharing your sushi story...this sounds just like how I introduced Bob to sushi when we first started dating! I'm glad he passed the sushi test. :)
